Prepare for Committee

Delegate Preparation Guide

Thorough preparation is the key to a successful NMUN conference experience. All delegates should read the NMUN Delegate Preparation Guide. It will provide answers to most of your questions.

Resolution Policy

Although delegates are encouraged to develop resolution writing skills, both in classroom scenarios and at other Model UN simulations, NMUN conferences do not accept pre-written resolutions. Any clause that is produced by an individual or with AI without being discussed and negotiated within a working group is considered pre-written. Delegates should refrain from discussing the issues with other delegations until their first committee session.

NMUN Learning Outcomes and AI

Model United Nations allows delegates to apply theoretical knowledge of international relations and of the United Nations system in a practical, hands-on setting. Through preparation and participation in NMUN, students will develop transferable skills such as leadership, negotiation, collaboration, public speaking, researching, and technical writing; advance a responsibility to be actively involved in global issues; and enhance their understanding of the structure of the international system and challenges of global diplomacy.

As the global community and the UN grapple with the promise and perils of artificial intelligence (AI), NMUN reasserts its commitment to these learning outcomes as our delegations balance the use of generative AI and AI technologies in the writing process with integrity, ethics, accessibility, critical thinking, communication skills, and more. Nothing can replace the hard-earned experience of researching, writing, negotiating, collaborating, and creating resolutions as a collective body in your assigned UN committee at an NMUN conference. That said, AI can be a tool for accessibility, English language learners, and others who struggle with writing and communicating in diplomatic language, or as a research tool to find sources about topics, countries, and ideas for potential solutions. As NMUN delegates put in the work to reach these learning goals and develop transferable skills, we trust that they will be able to make informed decisions, taking into consideration their delegation’s policy, about the use of AI and evaluate the quality of the AI outputs. Using AI without that understanding can lead to bland overgeneralizations, the perpetuation of incorrect or harmful information, and bias, and do little to help delegates gain the knowledge and skills we emphasize at NMUN.

General Resources

The resources listed below are only a starting point for your research. We highly recommend extensive use of academic books; scholarly journals; newspaper articles; and information from websites of UN bodies, affiliated non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other international or regional organizations such as the World Bank, WHO, OECD, APEC, etc. Delegates are advised to evaluate online sources carefully and only use reputable sources. Librarians can provide invaluable assistance with your research.

Background Guides

The Find Your Assignment tool lists which committee background guides are relevant to your assignment; only use those.
