Who Volunteers?

NMUN is staffed by more than 100 volunteers who work as part of a diverse, international team.  We seek enthusiastic NMUN alumni willing to help organize future NMUNs.  Applications from both undergraduates and those with degrees are encouraged.  Many staff members are current graduate students. Prior NMUN staff experience is preferred or required for programs outside New York where less training is offered.

Why Volunteer?

  • Staff members build skills in facilitation of debate, conflict resolution, and customer service while learning alongside delegates about emerging global issues.

  • Build your résumé! – we offer publishing credit for the written background materials and professional experience organizing and staffing the world’s largest university-level simulation of the United Nations.

  • The greatest reward: lifelong friendships formed among volunteers.

  • You can be part of an international volunteer staff committed to the ideals of the United Nations!

"The NMUN staff experience is more than an opportunity for meaningful volunteerism. the skills acquired at the conference, as both a delegate and staff member, have been invaluable to me as I have worked at non-governmental organizations, finished my graduate degree, and completed my transition to teaching. Perhaps most importantly, serving on NMUN staff means I reunite with friends each spring, after a year of planning and preparation, to discuss our lives, recent educational or occupational changes, and the most pressing issues facing the international community. It is an enlightening and humbling experience to be surrounded by these incredible people, to network with accomplished speakers and presenters, and to gain deeper appreciation for the monumental challenge of multi-lateral diplomacy at the United Nations."

-- Jennifer Hathaway Spalding,
2001-2004 NMUN Delegate,
2005-2008 NMUN Volunteer Staff Member

Financial Considerations

NMUN•NY offers training, provides New York hotel accommodations and reimburses up to $700 in travel expenses (based on zones).

NMUN•DC provides Washington, DC hotel accommodations. Volunteers are responsible for their own air and ground transportation.

NMUN•CHINA provides lodging and group air transportation from Newark to Xi'an or up to the equivalent value, if other origins. Volunteers are responsible for their own additional travel cost and for passport and visa expenses.

Thank you to all of our volunteers for making NMUN a success!
