NMUN•DC | OVERVIEW

NCCA /NMUN is partnering with the Osgood Center for International Studies to hold National Model UN-DC  at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). The size is capped at 480 delegates. There are six committees (SC, GA1, GA3, WHO, UN Population Fund and the UN Committee on Trade and Development) and an Additional Security Council for unaffiliated delegates. The keynote speaker is (tentative) Palestinian Ambassador to the US - Afif Safieh. Additionally, each Committee will receive a briefing from an expert speaker (e.g., the SC briefer will be the State Department official who heads its UN Affairs Office). Embassy briefings can be arranged (click here for more information on this). The Conference will be developmental - it will focus on teaching new delegates. A modified version of New York rules will be enforced and all Directors and Assistant Directors will be NMUN-trained.

WHAT IS MODEL UNITED NATIONS?

Model United Nations is a simulation of the real United Nations. School teams are assigned to different countries with teams of students representing different UN committees. After extensive research on their countries’ policies toward specific topics, students, as representatives of different countries, work within their respective committees together to formulate resolutions and reports - the tools that the United Nations use to initiate action that affects the world.

Students also learn about the United Nations procedure, treaties, the balance of maintaining a country’s policy and interests, while being able to work with other countries in order to further the work of the committee. In all, Model United Nations is a program that expands a student’s knowledge of the world and gives them a chance to experience politics and international affairs from many different perspectives.
