WHO?

Is the NMUN for high school students?

No, our Conference is only for college and university students. High school students looking for a Model UN in which to participate might want to obtain information from the National High School Model UN (NHSMUN). The Web site for the NHSMUN is www.nhsmun.org.
Please note that the NHSMUN is not affiliated with the NMUN Conference.

WHEN?

What are the dates of the NMUN Conference?

The dates of upcoming NMUN conferences are:

2008: 18-22 March (Sheraton) & 22-26 April (Marriott)
2009: 5-9 April (Sheraton) & 7-11 April (Marriott)
2010: 28 March - 1 April (Sheraton) & 20-24 March (Marriott)

Dates vary in order to secure the most affordable hotel rates during non-peak times and to allow us access to the United Nations headquarters during scheduled breaks. Consequently, the conference often falls on or near holidays of several world religions. We respect a delegate's choice to miss sessions to participate in services.

When will next year's NMUN registration/application brochure be available?

Complete application information is available on-line by 1 September each year until the conference is full.  For more details contact the NMUN Secretary-General at secgen@nmun.org.

WHERE?

Where is the NMUN Conference held?

The 2008 NMUN Conference will run as one conference with two schedules. Each schedule will have identical committees and topics, equal access to the UN, and offer smaller committees / more assignment options. The first schedule will run 18-22 March at the New York Sheraton. The second schedule will run 22-26 April at the New York Marriott Marquis. The Opening Ceremony and Closing Session are traditionally held at United Nations Headquarters.

Is our delegation required to stay at the host hotel? What is the cost?

No, delegations can stay wherever they choose; hoever, NMUN has negotiated very competitive (in NYC) rates at the hotel where most committee meetings take place.

For 2008, the hotel rates are $207 for single/double/triple/quadruple occupancy (1-4 people).

*Only available until 1 month before NMUN or until sold out &
*This base rate does not include city, state & local taxes of approx. $30 per night. Consult with your school business office about tax exemption in New York City. (It is not automatic for schools!)

What is the minimum number of delegates required?

This minimum number varies depending on the country assignment. Schools may find it advantageous to form joint delegations to represent a country.

This maximum number of delegates that can attend varies depending on the country assignment. The assignment matrix indicates 1-delegate and 2-delegate maximum committees and a total minimum and maximum. Some schools may bring up to three extra delegates to rotate in - but no more than the maximum number may be in committee at any time.

FACULTY AND HEAD DELEGATES

What responsibilities do head delegates hold at NMUN?

The head delegate serves as point of contact for the NMUN Secretariat and usually completes the task of check-in registration for his/her delegation. Also, this person will attend the head delegate meetings and serve as an important point of interaction for the Conference and the given delegation. Other than these additional responsibilities, the head delegate can participate in their own committee during the Conference and has all the rights and responsibilities of every other delegate at the Conference.

Can head delegates participate in a committee?

Yes, head delegates can participate in a committee. The restriction on participating in a committee, however, is that head delegates cannot try to participate in more than one committee and/or participate on behalf of other members in their delegation.

Are there events for faculty advisors during the Conference?

Faculty members of our Board of Directors sponsor several events for faculty advisors. A schedule will be available during registration.

May our school bring more than one faculty advisor or head delegate?

Yes, schools can bring more than one faculty advisor or head delegate.

STAFF

How can I apply for a staff position even though the application deadline has passed?

Although the initial volunteer staff application deadline has passed, you are strongly encouraged to submit an application for future consideration. Volunteer staff applications are posted in the Volunteer Section of the Web site.

MISSION BRIEFINGS

Will the Conference organize our Mission Briefing?

No. Delegations can use the materials and the information that will be provided on our Website to organize their briefing. Please contact secgen@nmun.org for more information.

COMMITTEES

When does time stop for our committee?

Time ‘freezes’ at 12:01 am the morning before the Opening Ceremonies for all committees except the Security Council simulations.  After this time, delegates will not be able to introduce real-world events to committees.  The Security Council is an exception because they have an open agenda that allows them to introduce topics in addition to those in the background guide as world conditions warrant.

Where do I send position papers?

E-mail addresses for submission are part of each background guide. Additionally, we ask that a complete set (for all committees of your assigned country) be sent to either positionpapers.sheraton@nmun.org or positionpapers.marriott@nmun.org depending on your venue assignment. Please cc: yourself as indication of submission. Due to volume, we cannot send individual confirmation e-mails.

Is it possible to have an extension for position paper submission?

Delegates are welcome to turn in position papers any time before the conference. Those submitted by the deadline will be (a) judged for awards; & (b) compiled as part of the CD given to each school of the position papers of other delegations. To be fair to all participants, we cannot extend the deadline for award consideration. We do encourage submission of papers even after the deadline because the papers are excellent preparation for the simulation and other delegates may wish to view them in committee.

Will my committee be doing reports or resolutions?

Once posted in mid-November, the background guide for each committee will indicate if the body writes reports or passes resolutions.

Who can I ask about the committee rules of procedure?

E-mail our group of rules experts at dirgen@nmun.org.

What is the maximum number of delegates that can attend NMUN?

This maximum number of delegates that can attend varies depending on the country assignment. The assignment matrix indicates 1-delegate and 2-delegate maximum committees and a total minimum and maximum. Some schools request more than one country assignment to allow greater participation. Head delegates may attend in addition to the maximum number if they are not participating in a committee. Some schools may bring up to three extra delegates to rotate in - but no more than the maximum number may be in committee at any time.

What are the NMUN Dress Code Guidelines?

The NMUN Dress Code adheres to professional business attire guidelines. Typically, delegates wear business suits to the Opening and Closing Ceremony and to all committee sessions. All clothing must adhere to guidelines that portray professionalism and modesty. International delegates in whose native countries traditional cultural dress is appropriate may dress in "professional business dress". These delegates are the only individuals to whom this applies. Any delegate attempting to use cultural costume to portray a "character" will be asked to leave the committee chamber and change into clothing that is more appropriate. If a delegate's attire is deemed inappropriate by the NMUN staff the delegate will be asked to leave the session and return with the appropriate attire. Also, note that it is inappropriate for delegates to display any national symbols such as flags, pins, crests, etc. on their person during committee sessions. UN symbols, however, are acceptable.

The Dress Code Guidelines are as follows:

Women: Standard female delegate attire for the conference is business jacket, skirt or slacks, button blouse, and dress shoes. Shirts that expose excessive bare skin on the chest, stomach or are otherwise revealing are inappropriate. Clothes that reveal undergarments are inappropriate.

Men: Standard male delegate attire for the conference is business jacket, slacks, button down shirt with tie and dress shoes. Shirts that expose excessive bare skin on the chest, stomach or are otherwise revealing are inappropriate. Clothes that reveal undergarments are inappropriate. Facial hair should be shaved or trimmed neatly. Dress sweaters are generally considered too casual, as well as shorts, ball caps, jeans, sneakers and sunglasses.

The NMUN is a program of the National Collegiate Conference Association (NCCA), a non-governmental organization of the United Nations as well as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of the United States.
