ALUMNI PROFILE:

Name:  Macarena C. Sarraf
Job Title: Program Advisor, President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, US Agency for International Development / Viet Nam Mission
Where: Ha Noi, Viet Nam

Involved with: Currently working on inter-agency coordination on PEPFAR-related issues.  Working to coordinate HIV/AIDS activities of the Centers for Disease Control, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, the Department of Defense, and the US Agency for International Development.  The most interesting aspect of my work is the dynamic country and environment I live and work in.  My colleagues are amazing professionals who I learn a great deal from, and Viet Nam is a dynamic and rapidly developing country with a great deal of history and a rich culture.  Of social significance, my husband and I joined an informal group of motorbike riders and we go out on our small mopeds on day trips outside of Ha Noi to explore the country-side and local villages…we have a blast!

NMUN History:
I served as a delegate from the Cal State Polytechnic University, Pomona in 1998 (represented Norway).  In 1999, I served as Head Delegate and sat on the ICJ as a representative from the Netherlands.  In 2000, I became an Assistant Director for UNHCR and in 2001 and 2002, I served as Committee Director for the League of Arab States and the World Health Organization.  Because of full time employment overseas, I was unable to continue my involvement with NMUN.

What has NMUN meant to me?  The NMUN was my first authentic experience of college-level camaraderie.  I developed many strong relationships with individuals in my delegation (many of which are still my very good friends today), and made some lasting friendships with staff members in my latter years with NMUN.  Not only did I learn a great deal about the inner workings of the United Nations, but I was exposed to an extensive network of professionals and aspiring professionals.  Most of all, I believe that my involvement with NMUN has shaped my professional opportunities and experiences and has contributed to my successful career as an international development professional.

Love of travel:
I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to do what I love best in life, and to do it frequently…and that is to travel. There is no favorite place I hold sacred, as every place I have visited has offered something unique, special, and unforgettable. Some places I would like to visit in the next few years are: India, Russia, and Sri Lanka.  The mot significant aspiration I have is to live well and to enjoy life. I try to maintain a healthy balance between work and life, and traveling affords me that balance that I continually see.

Significant aspiration:  I've always dreamt about writing a novel.  I was finally inspired to begin writing in mid-2006 while living in Nigeria (out of sheer boredom I suppose).  I have finally landed a publisher and my novel will be in print by early-mid 2008.  This is a dream come true.  And of course, I hope to continue writing more novels as time permits.  Viet Nam is not a boring post at all, so I may find it difficult to actually settle down and write.  Finally, I hope to begin a Doctorate in Public Health in a few months and if I can manage to complete that program successfully while working full-time with USAID, I will consider myself very fortunate.  Wish me luck!
